To plant a garden is to believe in tomorrow

Audrey Hepburn

Dear Neighbour,

We’re seeking your input, and that of all fellow residents of Dover Place, in an opportunity to discuss the evolution of our communal garden.

By way of introduction, we live at 3 Dover Place and have been tending the garden for several years. You may have spotted us out there, drowning dahlias, ruining rhubarb and sabotaging squash. Battling with bindweed is an annual affair, whilst dragging concrete benches, boulders & birdbaths up the garden path has provided hours of entertainment (and backache). In making these changes, our primary aim has been to improve the garden for the benefit of all who see and use it. We’ve sought to gradually develop the space such that it forms a foundation for wider involvement and usage. It was therefore a delight to be joined last summer by a few more people enjoying the garden – and we hope for wider participation in future.

The timing of this consultation is driven by several factors – a renewed focus on community developed during the Covid-19 pandemic, the interest of fellow neighbours who have visited the garden and the necessity for wider involvement if the space is to reach its full potential. To move this forward, we’re inviting expressions of interest and proposing, thereafter, a gathering in the garden to share and consider views.

The following pages set out some key aims & objectives that we hope might find broad appeal. We’ve sought to capture these in the attached scheme, ‘A Garden for All’, which is offered by way of a starting point to highlight what might be achieved through greater involvement. We feel our garden has great potential that can only be realised through engagement with, and participation of, interested parties from across our community.

We’re proposing an initial consultation period of 10 weeks, during which time we’ll try to reach all owners and residents. We’ll then compile and share all correspondence anonymously (via email) in June. This consultation is open to all residents and property owners at Dover Place – and your contribution is most welcome.

TJ & Becca (3 Dover Place).
